Bikes to go

Monday, April 13th, 2009

To the new Prius we’ve added excellent bike racks at only £65 each. They hold the bikes really well, so now we’ve been able to get beyond the impossible local hills to find some really nice cycle tracks. Feeling much better and a little fitter after this week’s eco holiday.

Almost Electric

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

It’s a long story but at last we have gone for a Prius.

Ideally we would have liked an electric car and my researches at the motor show turned up a few possibilities:

But then I went to a really interesting lunch at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the leading manufacturers were discussing their plans […]

A new calculator and a surprise

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’ve just got round to signing up to Torchbox’s carbon calculator - The Carbon Account. It’s quite the best I’ve used for a number of reasons. It logs detailed information about your particular vehicles and your energy supplier, looks up the latest information on them and presents your progress to reducing your carbon footprint in […]

Could be the car

Friday, May 25th, 2007

The problem with the G-Wiz seemed to me to be that you couldn’t carry much. Same with the Electrica with a promised range of 70 miles, using Lithium batteries (but at £12K)
We use the scooter for personal journeys, but need something for local shopping and taking stuff to the dump. So I really like the […]

CO2 Emissions - UK Stats

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

A really graphic chart of the comparative figures on CO2 emissions from the different UK sources from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory.

It doesn’t include air transport, but does show the huge effect of road transport, as well as the fact that domestic has declined much less than industrial combustion since 1980 and is now larger. […]

Reality Check on the numbers

Tuesday, October 11th, 2005

A very helpful reality check on my original figures comes from a comment on the blog questioning the original figure of 20,700 kWhs per year. He couldn’t believe that we could be using four times the national average for domestic electricity use. This sounds right. The figure was based on electricity bills that were […]

A Chance to be Hybrid

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

We were surprised and delighted when we got to Hertz in San Francisco to find they had allocated us a Prius for our three days driving to meetings around Silicon Valley. This was a great way to see what it was like to drive a hybrid in case we could ever afford one (£20K in […]

Kyoto Meter

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

A great idea over dinner from Rajendre Khargi, Chair of OneWorld Netherlands. Why not add a third option to the in-car navigation systems? As well as choosing the fastest route or the most fuel efficient, why not have the option of the route that saves the most CO2? This would presumably be based on estimations […]

At last THE SUM

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Given that the car does 5,000 miles a year on average and the scooter mileage is around 500, we can finally calculate our current total emissions (hold breath)…
And the answer is: 21.8 tonnes of CO2 a year. This comes 89% from home energy and 11% from transport.
And we have to consider that:

this doesn’t allow for […]
